Local Papers are vital for local democracy

The writer argues that all news starts off local and that without reporters dropping into court cases, pestering NHS managers, badgering local bobbies and sitting through an inquest, democracy and accountability in Britain would not be possible. “Don’t let anyone tell you that the propaganda rags produced by local councils are a substitute for independent newspapers”.
