Waiting list for council home soars
Author: Daily Mirror - Jan 22, 2009
Around 200,000 families have gone on council house waiting lists in the past year, figures will reveal today. And housing charity Shelter says it proves the government desperately needs to put more money into building new council homes. Housing statistics are expected to show 1.8 million families are on waiting lists across England compared to 1.6million 12 months ago. Shelter chief executive Adam Sampson said: "Since Labour took power 12 years ago the council house waiting list has almost doubled. "Instead of pumping public money into saving troubled banks Gordon Brown should also turn his attention to the collapsing building industry and do all he can to kick start a decade of intense social house building." Housing Minister Margaret Beckett this week announced new plans to make it easier for councils to build homes.
