Britain's roads blighted with potholes

This month's deep freeze has left Britain's roads blighted by thousands of potholes.

Experts predicted yesterday that the recent heavy snowfall and ice could leave councils patching up more than a million holes this year, with an estimated repair bill of £64million.

Experts predicted that as a result of this month's Arctic blast, councils could be left patching up more than 1million holes in the space of a year.

The road defects are also posing a significant danger to motorists and cyclists.

Local authorities across the country are now lobbying the government for extra money to cover the unexpected repairs while others are freeing up extra funds.

In many areas, particularly in the north-east of the country which is currently under a severe weather warning, the true extent of the problem is yet to be revealed as snow continues to fall.
