Recycling first for Royal borough

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has become the first council in the UK to launch a scheme that rewards residents who recycle.

Householders will be able to claim money off at McDonalds, Marks & Spencer and other shops and restaurants under the initiative launched.

Homes with micro-chipped bins will earn points that can be tracked online and cashed in for goods and services or converted into charity donations.

The rewards programme has already proved successful in the US where it operates in 19 states. The company behind it says it can boost recycling rates anywhere from 30 to 80%.
