Local government issues should be placed at the heart of national politics, and have its role protected by law, according to a new report by think-tank Localis. The study, sponsored by the Local Government Association, compares the government of England with that of other countries, showing how local government here is not given the status it gets in countries as diverse as South Africa and Denmark. The report recommends that the role of local government must be enshrined in legislation, ensuring that councils are protected and respected. It also suggests the burden of inspection and performance management should be reduced. Go the the article here
