The future of regional governance

Localis, a network of primarily local government organisations which meet regularly to discuss current public policy issues, has recently produced a report entitled The Future for Regional Governance which makes the suggestion that the Government's case for Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) is based on little or no evidence, and that the current Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration Review (SNR) does not go far enough to devolve power from the regional tier to local authorities (LAs).
The report proposes a dramatic overhaul and a slimming-down of the current responsibilities of RDAs. It suggests that RDAs cannot be seen as a framework for significantly reducing economic disparity and recommends that local authorities work together to tackle activity which does not fit neatly into their boundaries, and that collaboration should be seen as a more inclusive approach to devolution.
