Social Media
Author: Localis - Jan 13, 2012
Given the relevance and importance of ICT technology and corresponding social media strategies, Localis has begun research to explore the use of social media within local government. Our research will explore topics related to local governance, community participation, public service provision, and local economic development, all within the context of the advancement of social media. This work will build on the current local government efforts for policy innovation, and also addresses growing corporate social responsibility initiatives within the private sector.
It is clear to local authorities that they need to be “connected”, using technology and social media outlets to their fullest. But, councils often need help in how to use these technological resources. Our research will look briefly at the development of ICT technology and infrastructure, which helps enable new possibilities. We will then look at how social media – making best use of new-and-improved technological infrastructure – can improve the quality of local public services, make best use of public knowledge and social capital, and reduce government headcount and intervention; it can also increase prospects of local economic development. Overall, we aim to show that technological infrastructure and advances in social media can help local authorities do more with less, an important objective given current austerity measures.
