‘Who’s going to build the Northern Powerhouse?’

In conjunction with the Greater Manchester Pension Fund, Lancashire County Pension Fund and London Pensions Fund Authority, Localis will be hosting a private round table discussion at Labour Party Conference in Brighton with MPs, peers and council leaders and chief executives that will address infrastructure funding.

With the government pushing the economic rebalancing of the UK to the front of their agenda, there is now a pressing need to consider how the infrastructure needed to support a Northern Powerhouse can be funded. Local government pension schemes (LGPS), when pooled, offer one means of providing this investment, yet they are often sidelined in any government discussions by foreign investors. This is to the detriment of both the country and the pensioners the LGPS supports.

This roundtable will bring together representatives of central and local government and pensions experts to debate what role the LGPS could and should play in funding the creation of new infrastructure in the north of England. The discussion will be structured around the following key questions:

  • What kind of role can LGPS play in delivering the infrastructure that the north of England needs?
  • How can LGPS come together as a ‘single voice’ to invest in UK infrastructure? And what can the government do to encourage further LGPS partnership working?

This event will be held at Labour Party Conference in Brighton on Tuesday 29th September. If you would be interested in hearing more about this event, please contact Jack Airey on jack.airey@localis.org.uk.
